Iron Age Pottery!

We’ve just had some very exciting Iron Age pottery brought to the Hub to be put on display. It was cleaned just this morning and is now available for viewing. Come down to the Hub in the Ipplepen Methodist church to see it. We’re open weekdays 10-4 so don’t forget to pop in!

Roman Amphora!

An exciting find was found by student Sang yesterday – part of a Roman amphora! The team are currently excavating it (as we write!) so we’ll bring you more updates as we progress. The amphora was just underneath the top surface of the Roman road. More images to follow!

Sunday 12th July

Sunday was wet and windy but spirits weren’t dampened and the students and volunteers ploughed on. We extended trench 9 to continue excavating the features in the geophysics survey and continued work in trenches 7 and 8, despite the weather!

The Hub’s 100th visitor!

We’ve just had our 100th visitor to the Hub this season! Don’t forget to come by and see our displays – we now have a display of some of the beads and a bracelet found during the 2014 dig. We’re in the Ipplepen Methodist church 10-4 every weekday so come and visit and see if you can be visitor number 200!

Pictures from the second day

We’re starting to find Romano- British nails and pottery in our trenches now, so we’re past the topsoil and at the right depth for Roman archaeology! Below are some pictures from the end of the second day showing the trenches so far:

Second Day

It’s nearing the end of the second day of our 2015 excavation and we’re getting close to a lot of new archaeology! The updates in the next few days should be full of information about exciting new finds – check back for updates.

Day 1

‘All systems go’ on site today as we start the 2015 season! What is really exciting about this year is that we are opening up two new trenches- too soon to say much about what might be in them yet, but make sure you check back here regularly as the excavation progresses in the coming days and weeks!

Just like last year we are in The Hub Monday-Friday 10.00-16.00. But this year we have bigger and better displays, with children’s activities, maps, displays and even more. Also, the cafe is open next door all week too, so make sure to nip by for a cup of tea and some cake too!

Photographs from the first day to follow soon!
